For over 200 years, developmental education (not just coursework for the under prepared college student, but all services that fall under the umbrella term "developmental education") has been an essential element in providing access to and support during higher education for millions of students in the United States. But this success has not come without healthy debate.
Few question the efficacy of providing learning assistance in the form of tutoring and supplemental instruction; fewer still question the importance and validity of advising and counseling. But some, who value these services but who do not recognize them as developmental services, do question the appropriateness of providing developmental coursework (which they often refer to as "remedial" coursework) on the college or university campus.
