Individual Membership: Benefits
(As of Feb. 21, 2001)

NADE provides a variety of services to its national members. Following is a list of some of them. Link to the NADE individual membership form in [pdf] format. NADE also has very active affiliate chapters at the state and regional level. Many of them have similar services. In order to maximize the benefits of NADE, educators are encouraged to join and be active at both the national and chapter level.

  • Publications: NADE publishes and sponsors journals, monographs, newsletters, directories and other materials covering numerous areas of developmental education including: theory, field research, exemplary programs, and current trends. All NADE members receive The Journal of Developmental Education, NADE Newsletter, two NADE digests and other publications. A major membership benefit is the subscription to The Journal of Developmental Education. This scholarly journal is published three times a year by the National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE). The Journal is published as a forum for educators concerned with the practice, theory, research, and news of the postsecondary developmental and remedial community. Its content focuses on basic skills education and includes topics such as writing, mathematics, reading, tutoring, administration, and program evaluation. Emphasis is placed on manuscripts that relate education theory to practical teaching and learning, expand current knowledge, or have a clearly demonstrated impact on the field.

  • For an additional fee paid directly to its publisher, by special cooperative arrangement with the Journal of Higher Education, NADE members may subscribe to this research-based publication for only $28, a 33% discount over the normal price of $42 annually. JHE is published by the Ohio State University Press.

  • Conferences and Workshops: NADE and its chapters sponsors both annual conference at both the national and state level conferences that provide professional development, renewal, networking opportunities, and a forum for members to present papers and research to the professional community. NADE members receive a discount on registration for these events. Link to national conferences [html]. Link to Chapter conferences [xls].

  • Special Interest Groups: Click here for a list of groups within NADE that provide members an opportunity to become more skilled in their specific interest while maintaining a vision of holistic education. These interest groups are called Special Professional Interest Networks (SPINs). The basic NADE membership includes a free membership in one SPIN group. Membership in additional groups requires a small fee. There are also several NADE Task Force groups that might also be of interest: Adjunct Professional Staff member, Workplace Literacy, and Diversity. Link to the chair persons of the SPIN groups. Link to a list of the committee chair(s).

  • Jobs Clearinghouse: The Placement Committee serves as a conduit for information to individual NADE members concerning developmental education job opportunities throughout the U.S. At the annual national conference there is a clearinghouse for job openings. Link to NADE careers and placement page.

  • Influencing Policy makers: Through a variety of activities at the state and national level, members of NADE share information with legislators and Policy makers concerning the issues related to developmental education students. Through coordination with NADE's Political Liaison Network, NADE provides critical information to these Policy makers. Link to political advocacy pages.

  • Mentoring: Past presidents of NADE will provide brief advice by mail or telephone. Link to a list of Emeritus Cabinet members.
